Tip: Ferencváros win or draw
Ferencváros enters the decisive stage of qualification with great motivation, as reaching the main phase of the Champions League would mean a return among Europe’s elite after five years. The Hungarian champion showed its strength especially at home – against Ludogorets they managed the second leg in Budapest with ease, winning 3-0 thanks to two goals from Barnabás Varga, the team’s biggest attacking threat. Robbie Keane is therefore counting on the power of the home atmosphere at the Groupama Arena, even though he had to swallow his first league defeat of the season against Puskás Akadémia at the weekend. The Ferencváros defense can also rely on the return of experienced Ibrahim Cissé, who increases the options at the back after serving his suspension. On the other hand, Qarabağ has been very dominant in this year’s qualifying – after comfortably eliminating Shelbourne and then crushing Shkëndija 6-1 on aggregate, they arrive in Budapest full of confidence. The key men of the Azerbaijani side are the pacey winger Leandro Andrade and young international Nariman Akhundzada, both with two goals in qualifying. An interesting subplot is the return of versatile attacker Kady, who briefly played for Ferencváros earlier in his career and will now try to score against his former club. Given the strength of both teams and the home advantage, Ferencváros should avoid defeat – which makes the double chance of a home win or a draw the most logical choice.
Tip: Crvena zvezda win
For Crvena zvezda, qualifying for the Champions League is almost an obligation – last year they featured in the group stage, where they managed to beat Young Boys and Stuttgart, and now they are just two games away from a return among the best. The Serbian champion easily took care of Lincoln Red Imps on the way to the play-offs, and then handled a demanding tie with Lech Poznań, which they essentially decided with a 3-1 away win. Coach Vladan Milojević can rely on the form of strikers Cherif Ndiaye and Bruno Duarte, who has already scored three times in qualifying. The atmosphere of the legendary “Marakana” will be a huge weapon – the hosts are unbeaten there in 17 matches. Pafos FC, on the other hand, is living a historic fairytale. They are playing Champions League qualification for the first time, having already eliminated Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dynamo Kyiv, showing very disciplined defense in both ties and not conceding a single goal. Coach Juan Carlos Carcedo has a diverse squad at his disposal, with experienced winger Mislav Oršić and Swedish forward Muamer Tanković standing out. While Red Star has the experience, quality, and the pressure of playing at home, Pafos can rely on the energy of an underdog. The match promises to be a clash of tradition against fresh enthusiasm, but the advantage of home ground clearly points towards Belgrade.
Tip: draw
A real European clash between two clubs with a rich history awaits the fans at Ibrox Stadium. Rangers, after missing last year’s Champions League, are now trying to return to the elite and have so far eliminated Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzeň, although they lost the second leg in Plzeň 2-1 and are still searching for optimal form under coach Russell Martin. The Scottish giants have been struggling in the domestic league, dropping points in the opening two rounds, but they traditionally appear much more dangerous in Europe. Their main attacking weapon is the pacey winger Djeidi Gassama with four goals in qualifying, though fans are also hoping for the return of Cyriel Dessers, who could give their offense an extra edge. Club Brugge, on the other hand, comes into the tie in excellent form – they eliminated Salzburg, won four competitive matches in a row, and also triumphed in the Belgian Super Cup. New attacking jewel Carlos Forbs has impressed with his dribbling and goals, while captain Hans Vanaken and young striker Romeo Vermant provide further attacking variety. History adds extra spice – the two clubs last met in the 1992/93 season, when Rangers won 2-1 at home. The atmosphere in Glasgow will be electric, but this Brugge side is strong and will very likely leave Ibrox with a draw.
